How to Play Two-Player Mahjong
Oh Mahj Goodness — where play meets meaning.
Overview
- Two racks — two hands. Each player manages two hands.
- Win Condition: The first player to declare Mahjong on BOTH racks wins.
- Also known as: Siamese Mahjong (made for two players).
Twice the strategy and twice the fun—plan both hands so they don’t compete for the same tiles.
Setups (Choose One)
- • Messy Mahjong: Shuffle all tiles face-down in the center and draw at random.
- • Double Walls: Build two walls back-to-back in front of each player’s racks. Draw from your own walls.
Starting Tiles
- • Dealer takes 28 tiles, then discards to begin the game.
- • Other player takes 27 tiles.
Use your double mahjong rack (or two separate racks) to manage both hands comfortably.
Building Your Hands
- • Build hands on both racks from your draws.
- • Avoid “playing against yourself” — if one hand needs lots of Flowers, don’t build the other for the same tiles.
- • You may swap tiles between racks anytime, unless a set is already exposed.
Playing
- • No Charleston.
- • Dealer discards first.
- • On your turn: draw a tile and use it for either hand, then discard as normal.
- • You may declare Mahjong on one rack early, but any jokers in that hand can no longer be swapped.
- • You don’t have to declare the first Mahjong immediately—waiting to announce both at once is allowed. If you need to call a tile for a single or pair to go Mahj, it’s fine to declare the first hand.
Winning the Game
- • Mahjong on both racks first — you win! The game ends immediately.
